Gary Keller asks a disarming question: "What's the one thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?" Answering it every day changes everything.

The domino effect

A domino can knock over another domino 50% larger. Chain the effect and the twenty-third domino is taller than the Eiffel Tower. Productivity works the same way: the right small action triggers a cascade.

Most to-do lists are flat — everything at the same level. The domino approach looks for the task that knocks the others down.

Ask the question every day

In the morning, before opening your email, write down your One Thing for the day. Just one. If it's well chosen, doing it will make three other tasks unnecessary.

This discipline echoes the Pareto principle: you're not trying to do everything, you're looking for the highest-leverage move.

The domino in your inbox

Every morning your inbox holds one email that matters more than the others — the one that unblocks a project, a decision, a relationship. That is your domino of the day.

Virtus Lever's algorithm is built around this idea: it shows you that message first, and you handle the rest at your own pace. To tie it to a routine, see the morning routine.

Protect the One Thing

A One Thing without protected time is wishful thinking. Block a slot for it before other people's emergencies colonise your day.

And accept imperfection on the rest: the goal isn't an empty inbox at any cost, but impact. That's also the point of our piece on lightening the mental load.
